Video Classics: 'Silent Lucidity' - Queensryche

To honor WNEW's legendary Firecracker 500, every day we are highlighting the music that populated the 1991 and 1996 lists, with classic videos, live performances and little-known facts about the songs and how they came to be...

Led Zeppelin,  the Who,  the Rolling Stones,  the Beatles, Elton John: These are the names regular readers of Video Classics have come to expect. Indeed, these and a handful of others dominate a great deal of the Firecracker 500 from which most of the Video Classics entries are drawn. Every once in a while, however, a lesser-known name appears on the list, like these folks ...

Queensryche often manages to blend two different genres championed by Firecracker 500 standouts Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd ... metal and progressive rock, respectively. No mean feat, given how different each can often sound from the other. Queensrÿche has been relatively successful in the progressive scene, having sold over 20 million albums worldwide including over 6 million albums in the United States.

wNew Rock Review: Dakota Suite and Emanuele Errante

Dakota suite After collaborating with Emanuele Errante on the remix of his The Night Just Keeps Coming project, Dakota Suite's Chris Hooson enlisted Errante again to work on an elegy for his sister, entitled The North Green Down.

Called "cinematic, hypnotic and simply beautiful" by critics, the song cycle is built around a series of themes Hoosen composed after the death of his sister-in-law, Hannah.

”In August 2009, Johanna and I took what we didn’t know then would be our last holiday with our sister-in-law, Hannah, " Hoosen said on his website.

"We knew that Hannah had cancer and that it was most likely going to take her from us and that moment was something we could feel draw ever closer. We all went to a place loved by our family for many years, Southwold in Suffolk. It was clear that Hannah was in pain. We were walking back from the ocean, for Southwold lies on the sea, through a part of Southwold called ‘the north green’.

"I was overwhelmed by what I could feel being taken from us, every step we took represented a small death. I knew then that I would miss her. During that walk with Hannah through the north green I felt there the beginnings of the music you hear on this record as the main ‘north green down’ theme and knew I had to keep going with this tribute to her."

The album is available for $9.99 at Think Indie

Rock Flashback: The Persian Gulf War

Much of rock's history is shrouded in the haze of legend, or even in danger of being forgotten. Join J.A. Bartlett of the Hits Just Keep On Comin' each Saturday as he reminds us why we love this music like we do ...

Here's a mind-blower: It's 20 years this weekend since the start of the Persian Gulf War. Through the fall of 1990, we all knew that it was coming. The United Nations had given Iraq a mid-January deadline for getting out of Kuwait, but it was clear Iraq would not comply. Contentious debate in the United States Senate resulted in a close vote authorizing military action. The first news bulletins, announcing the change from Operation Desert Shield to Operation Desert Storm, hit the air on the evening of January 16.

The day before the war began, an updated version of John Lennon's 1969 anthem Give Peace a Chance, billed to the Peace Choir, was released. The record was produced by Lenny Kravitz and Lennon's son Sean, then 15. Stars on the record included Tom Petty, members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Duff McKagan of Guns 'n' Roses, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby, and a liberal sprinkling of early 90s flavors-of-the-moment. See how many you can spot in the video below.

More leftovers from the Gulf War follow the jump.

Video Classics: 'The Last Worthless Evening' - Don Henley

To honor WNEW's legendary Firecracker 500, every day we are highlighting the music that populated the 1991 and 1996 lists, with classic videos, live performances and little-known facts about the songs and how they came to be...

One of Don Henley's best-known songs is The End of Innocence, which has been featured in Video Classics past. The End of Innocence was also the title of a Henley album, one that brought us a not-quite as well-known tune that still also made the WNEW Firecracker 500 ... The Last Worthless Evening ...

The song just missed the Billboard Top 20, reaching #21 in 1989. It's best Billboard performance came on the Mainstream Rock chart, where it hit #4. As far as the Firecracker 500 goes, The Last Worthless Evening came in at #447 on the 1991 list, but failed to make the cut in 1996.

The song is actually a bit more hopeful than its title might suggest. The lyrics are ostensibly spoken by the secret admirer of someone who has been through heartbreak some time ago, and who has yet to become able to move on. The singer, no stranger to heartbreak himself, nonetheless fantasizes about the day when he will be able to approach the object of his desire and show her she can let go and love again, that she has spent her 'last worthless evening.'

As an album, The End of Innocence has been Henley's most-successful to date. The lyrics for the title track also netted him his second Grammy

Classic Recording Studios: Kin-Tel Recording Studio

Built in the mid-'60s by Ron Kinder and radio station owner Cecil Heftel, Kin-Tel was primarily known as Atlanta's best studio for producing jingles. With just 8 tracks available, it wasn't a facility for making records.

But, one day in 1968, when Master Sound was booked, Joe South approached Kin-Tel to record his song, Games People Play. From that point on, Kin-Tel became another in the long line of great recording studios in Atlanta in the 1960s and '70s.

WNEW Rock News: McCartney to Serenade Royals?

That would be the England Royals, not the Kansas City baseball team.

Rumor on the internet has Paul McCartney in London in April to perform at the Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

“William and Kate have chosen their wedding list and Paul McCartney is their #1 choice to perform,” according British tabloid The Daily Star. “He said he feels very privileged.”

The Royals claim nothing has been finalized, though plans have been leaked over the past few weeks involving Westminster Abbey, the Archbishop of Canterbury and a large number of horses.
